The book of Jonah ends with the LORD putting the question to Jonah. Did Jonah ever get over his hatred of the Ninevites? |

Nolan, No.
Jonah doesn't anwser God's last question (4:11). He obeys, finally ... but when his mission is a success (3:5), he is not happy (4:1). As a child of a missionary, we rejoiced over one convert.

Hello again Steve!
Isn't this a tragedy? How God's chosen servant does not show any joy in the wake of his mission being successful? His life was spared for this very purpose- to save the Ninevites! And yet he can thank and praise God in the belly of a whale and not give thanks to God for using him to save a nation? One can only wonder what would have happened if Jonah actually rejoiced with the Ninevites in their salvation and stayed with them a while longer as 'brothers and sisters' in the ways of God! The wrath spoken of in Nahum may have been thwarted or at least prolonged to some extent if Jonah had proved to be a more steady influence on the Ninevites (but of course, that would be speculation on my part).. It makes you wonder how effective his message was if he did not wholeheartedly believe in it? But even with that message, God was able to use him and speak through him to save those whom he hated.
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-2

Ok, Nolan,
Getting serious. There could have been what scientist would call prehistoric fishes of such huge dimensions like we don't have today. Job 41:1 and Psalm 104:26 both speak of Leviathan. There would have been a lack of oxygen but If God could have provided a fish right at that time, He could have made provision for Jonah to survive. I wish I could remember where I heard it, but on TV not too long ago, I heard about a man who had been swallowed by, I think it was a sperm whale. It was killed shortly thereafter and the man was still alive, although badly burned by the gastric juices and blind. (He probably didn't have too many people who enjoyed breathing around him for a while either. I can't help it - your comments to my "big one" still has me laughing!). If this could happen now without God's orchestrating it for scripture, I know he could do it then. So I believe it was a sea dwelling dinosaur.

Debbie, I appreciate your 'getting serious.' :)
That is at least a possibility (the sperm whale). But then again, all things are possible with God! A sea dwelling dinosaur such as Leviathan? Interesting.. If Jonah's skin had been 'bleached' by the gastric juices of the whale/fish, then I can see why the Ninevites thought that he had been sent from God! :) Thank you Debbie for your insight!

OK, Nolan, Debbie, Ed and everyone else who would like to read a couple of fascinating (and biblically sound) fish stories. Go to icr.org. Go to search at the bottom of the home page. Type in "Jonah" and enjoy. The articles are written by John Morris, Ph.D., President of Institute for Creation Research in El Cajon, CA. My wife and I have the pleasure of knowing John and his wife Dalta, a delightful and dedicated Christian couple. --Hank |

We're getting serious with this question? :-) Oh Okay! Then the answer must be a Jewfish. A Jewfish so named for their insatiable hunger for Jews. I don’t know about you but I’m having great fun with this. Okay I repent I'll be good!

You know John Morris? I have heard of him and do go to his web site. It's given me a lot of answers to give to people who have had questions over the years. There's is the idea of taking God's Word as truth and seeing if science is true in relation to it, not the world's way, whish is just the opposite. Awesome site.

I think it was Probably a whale shark it is the largest known living fish. It vacumes up small fish like anchovies objects to large to pass thru its digestive system, such as people, are periodicly expelled by gastral inversion. The problem with a marine reptile as some others here have suggested is they are all active predators on larger animals and would have killed and eaten him. |

We have no idea what kind of sea animal swallowed Jonah. There is some anecdotal evidence of people being swallowed whole even by sharks and in one case came out alive when harpooned afterwards. |

Good question! And like the carefully constructed short story that it is we aren't told (who's the hero of the book? How many characters in the story have names? Where'd Jonah get spit out? How'd he get to Nineveh? How long did that take?).
However, given that the book is full of ironies (like a prophet of God disobeying and trying to run away (to where pray tell?), pagan sailors who offer a sacrifice as soon as they are able, a city repents, even the cattle wear sackcloth, etc.) it is highly likely that Jonah wrote it himself (reserving the ultimate irony for himself)--note that it is Jonah who gives the theology of the whole book: Jonah 4:2b. |

Yes, that would present a bit of irony, since Jonah wrote it himself! :-)

My NIV Bible study notes say:
3:1, 2 Jonah had run away from God, but was given a second chance to participate in God's work. You may feel as though you are disqualified from serving God because of past mistakes. But serving God is not an earned position--no one qualifies for God's service. But God still asks us to carry out his work. You may yet have another chance. |

In the case of Jonah, God used a storm and three days in the belly of a large fish to turn Jonah back to Him. But the most significant example is God scattering the 10 tribes that made of the Northern Kingdom, by using the nation of Assryia and later using Babylon to scatter the two remaining tribes. After this "calamity" Israel never again turned to idol worship. God does use circumstances to get our attention, but only after he gives us fair warning to turn from our sin. I wouldn't use the word calamity as much as I would use the judgement.
God bless you,

God chastens his children. Hebrews 12 tells a whole lot about that.
